Bernard's popularity is making more and more people not like him. Bernard is hosting a party for John and since everyone is so interested in John everyone goes to it. Bernard thinks everyone is there for him but really they aren't. John said he would go to this party but decided not to. Once the people found out that John wasn't there and that he wasn't coming, they didn't want to be there anymore either. All of the guests get super mad at Bernard and start calling him names and saying that he threw the whole party knowing that John wouldn't go, just to get attention. This showed Bernard that without John he is really nothing and the people don't really like him.The Director denies that he is Johns father and acts like he has no idea who he is. Then he leaves and ended up quitting the job. I thought that the Director was going to deny it but I thought that the people would believe John and Bernard. In both of these chapters we also see Bernard's character change. Since he brought The Savage to the Hatcheries Bernard has become very popular. The popularity is going to his head and he is doing and talking about things he normally wouldn't. Bernard is bragging about all of the girls he has been with and before he was popular he was embarrassed to talk about that. I don't like the new Bernard.
We saw the way the Director reacted to Bernard and John when they said that John was his son. I was guessing that he was going to react like that. He just laughed and denied it and then walked away. The Director acted like he had no idea what they were talking about and that they were completely absurd. I think that John is going to realize that the hatchery is not normal and him and Bernard are going to try to go against it and change their ways.
Bernard and Lenina get to New Mexico and the reservation. Lenina is really shooken up about what she sees and what the people are like. When she sees the old man, she starts freaking out because people in the hatcheries do not grow old and this is odd to her. This culture is way different that what they are used to. Bernard thought that the people on the reservation and the way they lived was beautiful. He loved seeing the mom feed her child and asked Lenina if she wanted a child of her own. Lenina definitely did not want that and was surprised that people sis that and had kids of their own.In this chapter we see Bernard question himself and give into a lot of what he does not believe in. Bernard is different than most people in this society because he does not like taking drugs, like soma, and other enhancements. He gave into taking soma because he was always grumpy and decided to be like the everyone else. I think that if Bernard sticks to what he truly believes in he could change the thinking of others and he could help fix this messed up society.
After reading chapter 2, I was shocked at the way they treated the children. Although, this method was effective it was very disheartening. The people didn’t want the children to like books or nature which seemed unrealistic. They would offer the children books or flowers and when the kids reached for them they would shock them and alarms would ring which really scared the kids. They would then offer the kids another book or flower and the kids would cower away and be scared of it. This did teach the kids to hate books and nature but it seems an inhumane way to do it. I think there would be another way to teach them this and I also don’t think kids need to hate books and nature to this extent.
The first chapter of Brave New World was somewhat hard for me to understand because there were many words that were unfamiliar to me. Trying to picture where it took place and what exactly was going on was a little difficult, but I pictured a huge building that worked kind of like a factory. It is also a pretty foreign subject so it took a while for to wrap my head around it completely. Although the subject is different, I am very interested in seeing where this book will go. I am excited about the book and think it will be a good read.
